Waterford’s Marie Crotty and Dublin’s Mickey Whelan are to be honoured with Lifetime Achievement Awards at the Gaelic Players Association’s Football Legends Lunch at Croke Park on the eve of the All-Ireland Football Final weekend. The lunchtime event will be held at Croke Park on Friday, July 28th.
One of the finest footballers ever to come out of Waterford, Marie Crotty has an astonishing list of honours. Foremost among those is being the holder of five Al-Ireland senior medals with her county and an astonishing ten All-Ireland senior medals with her club Ballymacarbry.
Marie was part of Ballymacabry’s seven-in-a-row All-Ireland winning team and she also claimed fourteen Munster titles with her club. With Waterford she claimed eight Munster winners medals and is also the holder of an All-Ireland junior medal. She is also a five-time All-Star winner.
Mickey Whelan’s name is synonymous with Dublin GAA both as a player and also as a manager/coach. He was on Dublin’s All-Ireland winning team in 1963 and also picked up four Leinster titles in 1959, 1962, 1963 and 1965.
He also enjoyed All-Ireland success with his club St Vincents in 1976, a feat he repeated as the club’s manager in 2008. He has also managed the Dubs and was a selector under Pat Gilroy in 2011 when they bridged a sixteen-year gap to claim Sam Maguire for the first time since 1995.
The GPA will be delighted to welcome members of the men’s football All-Ireland winning teams from 2013, 1983 and 1963 (Dublin), 2003 (Tyrone), 1993 (Derry) and 1973 (Cork). On the women’s side the All-Ireland winning teams from 2013 (Cork), 2003 (Mayo) and 1993 and 1983 (Kerry) will also be in attendance.
