GAA, GPA and Gaelchultúr Announce Landmark Partnership

100 Irish Language Scholarships for Gaelic Games Inter-county Players

The GAA, GPA and Gaelchultúr, the world’s leading provider of Irish-language education, are proud to announce an exciting new collaboration, offering 100 scholarships to inter-county male and female players. This innovative partnership aims to deepen the longstanding relationship between Ireland’s national language and Gaelic Games, creating new pathways for inter-county players to reconnect with and promote the Irish language.

The GAA, GPA and Gaelchultúr are also being supported by An Cumann Camógaíochta and the LGFA in this initiative and hope that all inter-county Gaelic games’ players will benefit from this scheme.

The scholarships will enable these sporting icons to immerse themselves in Irish, becoming ambassadors for the language within their clubs, counties and communities.

This landmark initiative follows close on the heels of Gaelchultúr’s recent national study, which revealed a substantial desire among the Irish public to improve their command of the Irish language. According to the study, 66% of adults in Ireland regret not having better spoken Irish, while 74% of them wish to improve their proficiency in the language.

The value of the Irish language to the cultural fabric of Ireland was highlighted in the same survey, with 73% of respondents agreeing that the language is essential to the identity of the Irish people, and 70% stating that Ireland would be culturally impoverished without it.

Jarlath Burns, GAA President, expressed his excitement at the launch of this partnership: ‘The GAA has always been about fostering community and identity, and our connection with the Irish language is at the heart of this. Through these scholarships, our players will lead by example, demonstrating that the Irish language is a living, thriving part of our heritage that deserves to be celebrated and passed on to future generations.’

Tom Parsons, CEO of the Gaelic Players Association (GPA), also emphasised the importance of the initiative: ‘Like our games, the Irish language is part of our culture and heritage. Therefore, we are delighted to partner with the GAA and Gaelchultúr in offering these opportunities to our members. I hope that in doing so they will also inspire those who look up to them as role models to use their cúpla focal and foster a sense of ownership of the language, ensuring its future is as strong as ever.’

Discussing the new partnership, Darren Ó Rodaigh, CEO of Gaelchultúr, commented, ‘This collaboration with the GAA and GPA provides a unique opportunity for players to strengthen their connection with the Irish language. By empowering sporting icons to become ambassadors for our language, we are not only promoting Irish but also strengthening the deep cultural ties between our national games and the language that is so integral to our identity.’

The launch of this collaboration is a source of great pride for all relevant organisations as well as Coiste Náisiúnta Gaeilge CLG under the leadership of Chairperson Áine Uí Choinn, as they work together to ensure that the Irish language thrives both on and off the field.

100 inter-county players will have the opportunity to begin their Irish-language journey in inspiring, interactive courses starting this week.

Comhpháirtíocht Eisceachtúil le CLG, Cumann Imreoirí Gael agus Gaelchultúr seolta

100 Scoláireacht Ghaeilge d’Imreoirí Idirchontae na gCluichí Gaelacha

Cúis mhór bhróid do Chumann Lúthchleas Gael, Chumann na nImreoirí Gael agus do Ghaelchultúr, an soláthraí oideachais Gaeilge is mó ar domhan, comhpháirtíocht spreagúil nua a fhógairt chun 100 scoláireacht a thairiscint d’imreoirí idirchontae. Tá sé mar aidhm ag an gcomhpháirtíocht nuálaíoch seo an gaol seanbhunaithe idir an Ghaeilge agus na cluichí Gaelacha a neartú trí bhealaí nua a chruthú d’imreoirí athcheangal a dhéanamh leis an nGaeilge agus í a chur chun cinn.

Tá tacaíocht á tabhairt ag an gCumann Camógaíochta agus ag Cumann Pheil na mBan don togra seo freisin agus táthar ag súil go mbainfidh gach imreoir idirchontae de chuid na gcluichí Gaelacha leas as an scéim.

Cuirfidh na scoláireachtaí ar chumas na laochra spóirt seo luí isteach ar an nGaeilge agus a bheith ina n-ambasadóirí don teanga taobh istigh dá gclubanna, dá gcontaetha agus dá bpobail.

Tá an tionscnamh eisceachtúil seo ag teacht sna sála ar staidéar náisiúnta a rinne Gaelchultúr le déanaí inar léiríodh go bhfuil fonn suntasach ar phobal na hÉireann feabhas a chur ar a gcumas sa Ghaeilge. De réir an staidéir, tá aiféala ar 66% de dhaoine fásta in Éirinn nach bhfuil Gaeilge labhartha níos fearr acu agus tá fonn ar 74% acu a gcumas sa teanga a fheabhsú.

Léiríodh luach na Gaeilge i saol cultúrtha na hÉireann sa suirbhé céanna mar d’aontaigh 73% de na freagróirí go bhfuil an Ghaeilge riachtanach d’fhéiniúlacht mhuintir na hÉireann agus dúirt 70% acu go mbeadh cultúr na hÉireann in áit na leathphingine dá huireasa.

Agus é ag caint ag an seoladh, léirigh Iarlaith Ó Broin, Uachtarán CLG, cé chomh tógtha agus atá sé leis an gcomhpháirtíocht seo: ‘Bhí sé mar sprioc ag CLG de shíor pobal agus féiniúlacht a chothú, agus tá ár gceangal leis an nGaeilge lárnach san aidhm seo. Trí na scoláireachtaí seo, léireoidh ár n-imreoirí trí eiseamláir gur cuid bheo dár n-oidhreacht í an Ghaeilge agus gur cheart dúinn í a cheiliúradh agus a chaomhnú do na glúnta atá le teacht.’

Leag Tom Parsons, Príomhfheidhmeannach Chumann Imreoirí Gael (GPA), béim ar thábhacht an tionscnaimh chomh maith, ‘Cosúil lenár gcluichí, tá an Ghaeilge mar chuid dár gcultúr agus dár n-oidhreacht. Mar sin, tá an-áthas orainn dul i mbun páirtnéireachta le CLG agus le Gaelchultúr leis na deiseanna seo a chur ar fáil dár gcuid ball. Tá súil agam go spreagfar na daoine siúd a bhfuil ardmheas acu ar ár mbaill, agus a bhreathnaíonn orthu le haghaidh dea-shampla, lena gcuid ‘cúpla focal’ a úsáid agus go mothóidh siad gur leosan an teanga, rud a chinnteoidh go mbeidh an Ghaeilge chomh láidir agus a bhí riamh amach anseo.’

Agus an chomhpháirtíocht nua á plé aige, dúirt Darren Ó Rodaigh, Príomhfheidhmeannach Ghaelchultúir, ‘Tugann an comhoibriú seo le CLG agus GPA deis ar leith d’imreoirí an gaol atá acu leis an nGaeilge a neartú. Trí mhórphearsana spóirt a chumasú le bheith ina n-ambasadóirí don teanga, ní hamháin go bhfuilimid ag cur an Ghaeilge chun cinn ach táimid ag neartú na nasc domhain cultúrtha idir ár gcluichí náisiúnta agus an teanga atá i gcroílár ár bhféiniúlachta.’

Is cúis mhór bhróid é seoladh na comhpháirtíochta seo do na heagrais chuí, agus Coiste Náisiúnta Gaeilge CLG faoi stiúir Áine Uí Choinn san áireamh, agus iad ag obair le chéile chun a chinntiú go mbeidh rath ar an nGaeilge ar an bpáirc imeartha agus sa phobal i gcoitinne.

Beidh deis ag 100 imreoir idirchontae tús a chur lena n-aistear foghlama Gaeilge i gcúrsaí bríomhara idirghníomhacha ón tseachtain dar tús an 14 Deireadh Fómhair 2024.
