Winners of the PwC GPA Women’s Player of the Month and PwC GAA/GPA Player of the Month Awards for September announced
- Antrim camogie’s Maeve Kelly and Meath footballer Vikki Wall are the women’s winners
- Tyrone football’s Conor Meyler picks up the men’s football award
Three players who contributed stellar performances that helped lead their counties to coveted silverware have been rewarded with Player of the Month awards for September.
Antrim camogie’s Maeve Kelly and Meath footballer Vikki Wall pick up the PwC GPA Women’s Player of the Month Awards while Conor Meyler of Tyrone was named as PwC GAA/GPA Player of the Month award winner for football.
For the third month in-a-row the women’s football award was won by a Meath footballer. Vikki Wall retained her crown from August following Emma Duggan’s July accolade, as Meath enjoyed a stellar summer culminating in winning the Brendan Martin Cup in a thrilling contest with Dublin on the 5th of September.
Vikki was the player of the match for the Royals in the decider, with her powerful runs a catalyst for much of Meath’s good play as they pipped 5-in-a-row chasing Dublin on a scoreline of 1-11 to 12 points.
Maeve scored 1-5 from play, with the goal following an incredible run a particular highlight, in an outstanding performance as Antrim overcame Kilkenny in the All-Ireland Intermediate camogie final on the 12th September.
Conor played a huge role in delivering Tyrone their first Sam Maguire cup since 2008 on the 11th September, with a sublime diagonal ball to set up Cathal McShane’s goal crucial in helping the Ulstermen overcome Mayo.
PwC are proud sponsors of the Player of the Month Awards across camogie, hurling and football, men’s and women’s. This is the first year that the PwC GPA Women’s Player of the Month Awards are being presented alongside their male equivalents. The prizes on offer for the winners match those presented to the male monthly winners.
Commenting on the announcement, Feargal O’Rourke, Managing Partner, PwC, said: “Well done to Vikki, Maeve and Conor from all of us at PwC for their stellar individual contributions in their respective finals which have led to them being named Player of the Month award winners for September. A Player of the Month award is always special, but to receive one having played such a crucial role in delivering glory to your county is to be particularly cherished.
There is always lots of competition to win these Player of the Month awards each month, so to be nominated, let alone win, recognises an excellent individual performance in men’s and women’s Gaelic Games. We are proud at PwC to partner with the GPA and the GAA to reward the skill, dedication and effort of all Gaelic players equally.”
Uachtarán Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Larry McCarthy said: “‘Congratulations to Conor on being named the PwC GAA GPA Footballer of the Month for September adding to his team’s outstanding achievement in being crowned the All-Ireland football champions for the first time since 2008. Conor played an integral part in the final where Tyrone produced the ultimate team display. We wish Conor every success as he competes with his club Omagh in the Tyrone county championship.’’
Speaking on behalf of the GPA, Tom Parsons, CEO added: “To step up to the plate and produce your best performance when it comes to the All-Ireland final is an outstanding achievement in itself. To be recognised by your fellow players for doing so is a real mark of respect. Congratulations to Maeve, Vikki and Conor on being voted for by their peers to win these awards which cap off a very memorable season. Congratulations too to the nominees and indeed to all the winners and nominees of the player of the month awards in 2021.”
The PwC GPA Women’s Player of the Month and PwC GAA/GPA Players of the Month Award winners are voted for by the GPA’s membership.
