A personal message from Melanie Verwoerd of UNICEF
Dear Friends and GPA members
I hope you can help us in UNICEF. As you know there was a very bad earthquake in Haiti. In all disasters it is always the children that suffer immediately and the most. When the earth quake hit on Tuesday January 12, just as it became dark, the children of Haiti’s lives changed for ever. In the few minutes the earthquake lasted, thousands of children lost their lives or were orphaned. Thousands are still buried alive. I travelled through Haiti a few years ago and can vouch for the fact that even under the best of times, Haiti can not provide even the most basic needs for children. So now, what little water they had has dried up, the electricity is gone and their houses have been destroyed. The stories we are hearing break our hearts. Little children jumped in panic from balconies and sustained horrific injuries. The hospitals have collapsed and the children have been left in the streets because there is just no medical help. Aid workers are talking of despair, while lining up little bodies in the road. I realize that we are living in difficult times in Ireland at the moment. But if you can spare a few Euro for these children we would really love to hear from you.
Please call us at UNICEF on 01-8783000 or make an online donation at www.unicef.ie
Please forward this message to as many of your friends and contacts who might be able to assist us.
Kindest regards
Melanie Verwoerd
