Karl Lacey (Donegal) and John Mullane (Waterford) have been named as the Opel GPA Players of the Month for July 2009

monthly-awards-july09The awards recognise the outstanding contribution both players made to their county's performances in Donegal and Waterford respectively in the Championship throughout July. Karl Lacey, who has been tipped in some quarters as the best defender in the country, was instrumental as his side emerged from the Qualifiers to reach the All-Ireland quarter-final.

Meanwhile, July marks two-in-a-row for John Mullane as he scoops the Opel GPA Player of the Month award for a second time. In a dramatic finish in Semple Stadium Mullane scored the crucial winning point against Galway to earn Waterford's place in the semi-final against champions Kilkenny.

Chairman of the football selection committee Martin McHugh said: "While some will consider me a biased Donegal man, I can honestly say Karl Lacey is one of the best defenders around. In an era when corner-backs are a precious commodity, Karl's tenacity in the tackle, tremendous discipline and uncanny ability to read a game make him a match for any of the country's top marksmen. While his season may have ended in disappointment, he has earned the recognition of his fellow players for his excellent displays in July."

Chairman of the hurling selection committee Donal O'Grady said: "John Mullane's popularity as a player within the hurling community has been proven yet again with his selection as Opel hurler of the month for the second successive month. His brave, passionate display in the Munster final was followed by his heroic never-say-die attitude against Galway which earned his side an All-Ireland semi-final appearance. It is the first time under this scheme that a player has won back-to-back monthly awards and it reflects John's fantastic contribution to Waterford's season."

Gaelic Players Association CEO Dessie Farrell added: "Congratulations to Karl and John for their displays in July. It's been a difficult season for Donegal but they battled hard throughout July and Karl was central to their progress in confounding the critics and reaching the quarter-finals. John Mullane is the beating heart of Waterford hurling and against Tipp and Galway, he proved that it even when the chips are down, he will continue to take the fight to his opponents. Thanks again to Opel for their continued support and for all the players who voted for our winners."

Aislinn Connolly of Opel Ireland said: "Opel Ireland congratulates Karl and John on winning the Opel GPA Player of the Month Awards for July 2009. It is an honour for these players to be voted for by their peers. Both players have made a huge contribution in bringing their respective stages to the closing stages of the championship. We look forward to watch the rest of the season play out in style".
