PLAYER GUM SHIELD PROGRAMME
A properly fitting gum shield can help prevent serious injuries such as broken teeth, jaw fractures and neck injuries by helping to avoid situations where the lower jaw gets slammed against the upper jaw. Gum shields are effective in moving soft tissue in the oral cavity away from the teeth, preventing laceration and bruising of the lips and cheeks.
From January 2011, as part of the GPA Health & Wellbeing Programme we will offer all senior inter-county footballers a free customised fitted gum shield through a GPA provider.
Providers will attend an inter-county training session of your manager's choice to take an impression of each player's mouth. The impression will be taken away, made and at a second session the customised gum shield will be fitted and can be altered on the spot to ensure the fit is comfortable.

The specific programme of work will consist of the following steps.
1. Provide the GPA with the contact person in the squad this can be manager/player liasion/rep
2. The Gum Shield provider will liaise with the contact person to arrange a time to carry out the individual moulds
3. The numbers and colours required will be agreed with the contact person
4. The Service Provider will be available to return with the completed gum shields within 7 working days of the moulds being taken
5. The Service Provider will liaise with the contact person to arrange a time to carry out the individual fittings
6. The fittings and any minor modification required by will be carried out by an appropriately qualified person
7. Any additional moulds required for squad members who were not present on the original visit will be taken at the second visit and arrangements made to return and fit the gum shield
8. Full feedback sheet will be provided to liaison person post event to ensure player satisfaction
